Hair loss after pregnancy: what is normal and what helps.

Postpartum shedding peaks three to four months after birth and usually stops by itself within a year. When to wait, when to check your blood, and when mesotherapy or GCELL helps.

Three or four months after giving birth, handfuls of hair in the shower. Almost every new mother in Alexandria who walks into Injection Studio describes the same thing, and almost every one of them is frightened by it.

Why it happens

During pregnancy, high oestrogen keeps hairs in their growing phase longer than usual, so you shed less and the hair looks thicker. After birth the hormones drop, and all those hairs that should have fallen out over nine months move to the resting phase together and fall out at once. It is called telogen effluvium. It is not baldness and the roots are not damaged.

When it stops

Shedding usually peaks around month four and slows by month six to nine. Most women are back to their normal density by the first birthday. Breastfeeding can stretch it a little.

When to check further

If shedding is still heavy after nine months, if you see patches rather than diffuse thinning, or if you feel exhausted, cold or your nails are brittle, ask for blood tests: iron (ferritin), vitamin D, B12, zinc and thyroid. Low iron after delivery is extremely common and it alone can keep hair shedding for a year.

What helps

Correcting any deficiency is step one. Gentle handling, no tight styles, and patience. If you want to speed recovery or the density is not coming back, hair mesotherapy (vitamins, peptides and growth factors injected into the scalp) or GCELL regenerative treatment can shorten the resting phase and thicken the regrowth. Dr. Sara usually plans four to six monthly sessions, starting once breastfeeding is established or finished, and never promises hair that was not there before.

Quick answers

Is hair mesotherapy safe while breastfeeding?

Most vitamin-based protocols are considered low risk, but Dr. Sara prefers to start after you stop breastfeeding or with your obstetrician’s agreement. We never use minoxidil or hormonal ingredients while you breastfeed.

Will my hair grow back on its own?

In the great majority of cases, yes, within a year. Treatment speeds and thickens the regrowth; it does not create it from nothing.

Does PRP help postpartum hair loss?

It can. We often combine PRP with mesotherapy or use GCELL when the thinning is more stubborn.
