The honest answer is “it depends on where, which product and who”. Hyaluronic acid filler is slowly broken down by your body, and the speed changes from area to area.
Typical durations
Lips: 6 to 9 months, because they move all day. Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: 9 to 12 months. Cheeks, chin and jawline: 12 to 18 months, sometimes longer, because firmer filler is used in an area that barely moves. Under-eye: 9 to 15 months with a soft, low-swelling filler.
What makes it fade faster
A fast metabolism, intense cardio several times a week, smoking, a lot of sun, and very expressive faces. The first syringe in a new area also seems to go faster than a top-up, because some of it is spent restoring what was lost before.
What makes it last
Choosing the right product for the area (Dr. Sara uses firmer products for structure and softer ones for lips and under-eye), a sensible volume, good sunscreen, and a small top-up before everything is gone rather than starting from zero each time.
Does filler ever stay forever?
Hyaluronic acid filler does not stay forever, though a thin remnant can persist longer than the label says, especially in the cheeks. This is one reason we never overfill: filler added every year on top of what is still there is how faces become “pillowy”.
Quick answers
Does filler stretch the skin when it fades?
No. The amounts used in a careful treatment do not stretch skin; the area simply returns to how it would have been.
Can I make filler last longer?
Sunscreen, not smoking, and a timely small top-up help. Nothing you eat or apply extends it meaningfully.
Can filler be removed if I dislike it?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase in minutes. Dr. Sara keeps it in the clinic at all times.
