Many of our patients in Alexandria are planning a pregnancy, pregnant, or breastfeeding, and ask what is still allowed. Here is the honest position Dr. Sara takes.
Botox
Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is no evidence of harm, but there are also no proper studies, and no responsible doctor will inject a product with no safety data into a pregnant woman for a cosmetic reason. Botox you had before you knew you were pregnant is not a cause for alarm; tell your obstetrician and carry on.
Filler and biostimulators
Also postponed. Pregnancy changes fluid balance and skin, so results are unpredictable and swelling is worse. Biostimulators act for months and are never started in pregnancy.
Skin boosters and Salmon DNA
Postponed as a rule. Some clinics treat during breastfeeding; Dr. Sara prefers to wait, or to ask your obstetrician, because the benefit is cosmetic and the data is thin.
Hair mesotherapy
Postponed during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, vitamin-only protocols can be considered with your obstetrician’s agreement; no minoxidil, no hormonal ingredients.
What you can do
Good skincare with pregnancy-safe ingredients (azelaic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, mineral sunscreen), gentle facials, and a consultation now so your plan is ready for the day you stop breastfeeding. Many new mothers start with skin boosters and Botox three months after weaning, when hormones have settled.
Quick answers
I had Botox and then found out I was pregnant. Is my baby at risk?
There is no evidence of harm from cosmetic doses. Tell your obstetrician and do not have more until after breastfeeding.
When after delivery can I have Botox if I am not breastfeeding?
Six to eight weeks after delivery, once you have had your postpartum check.
Is there any injectable that is proven safe in pregnancy?
No cosmetic injectable has pregnancy safety data. “Not proven harmful” is not the same as “proven safe”, and we treat it that way.
