Swelling after lip filler is normal and expected. Lips have a rich blood supply and thin skin, so they react more than any other area. Knowing the timeline stops the day-two panic.
Day 0
Straight after the session the lips look fuller than the final result, with a few needle marks. Some patients see a slight asymmetry caused by uneven swelling, not by the filler itself.
Days 1 to 2
The peak. Lips may feel tight, the upper lip often swells more, and a small bruise is possible. This is when most people think “too much”. It is not the result.
Days 3 to 5
Swelling falls quickly. Bruises turn yellow and fade. Lips start to feel like yours again.
Day 14
The real result. Only now do we judge symmetry, shape and whether a top-up is wanted. Dr. Sara books the check-in at two weeks for exactly this reason.
How to calm it
Cold compresses for the first evening, sleeping with the head slightly raised, no hot drinks, alcohol, heavy exercise or sauna for 48 hours, and no pressing or massaging unless Dr. Sara asked you to.
Call us if
The lip turns white or dusky-purple in a patch, the pain is severe and one-sided, or the swelling gets worse after day three instead of better. These are rare and treatable, and we want to see you the same day.
Quick answers
Are lumps after lip filler normal?
Small soft lumps in the first week are usually swelling and settle by two weeks. A firm lump that stays is checked and can be smoothed or dissolved.
Can I wear lipstick after lip filler?
From the next day, with a clean brush or a fresh product, once the needle marks have closed.
Will the swelling hide my result?
Yes, for about a week. Judge the lips at day fourteen, not day two.
